Classroom Management Plan based on Self-Discipline Pyramid
designed by Villa, Thousand & Nevin (2010, p. 173)
Philosophical Background:
My educational philosophy is Essentialism, which strives to promote valuable members of society. This philosophy believes that the school as a whole needs to strive to build a community and a common foundation. I implement this part of the philosophy in creating a caring community within my classroom. I allow students opportunities to create their own class rules. Also by providing an environment where students work together to complete challenging tasks in groups and establishing that no one is allowed to make others feel dumb. I plan to create a classroom where everyone is willing to help others so that everyone can achieve success. This is a push towards providing just students to society. Essentialism believes that there should exist structure within a classroom. The recovery strategies that I value will help students recognize productive and non-productive behaviors and will present ways to end non-productive behaviors. One way that I will develop structure within the classroom will be to use a rainstick, making students aware that I want their attention. My educational philosophy encourages logical thinking and teaches reading, writing, and computing skills using rigor. These strategies are present in Life Skills- Long-Term Support. Students will participate in logical debates to convince others of their mathematical reasoning, which will force students to think critically. Essentialism promotes respect for authority and discipline. The strategies described in the Somewhere Else Plan focus on constructing and maintaining a respectful learning environment. We will establish a planning room where students that cannot control themselves in the classroom can go to regain their composure. Essentialism accepts the fact that curriculum changes over time and may need to be altered to fit the needs of students that have special needs. This is shown in the Wraparound Support because I strive to constantly be a life-long learner. I will constantly push myself to learn about my students and what their needs are from academic goals to accommodations that they will need as part of their IEPs.
