Level 3: Life Skills- Long-Term Support
Strategies:
1. Cooldown and Planning Procedure: Students face the pressure of having to achieve in school but also have other issues outside of school. In order to help students overcome these problems I plan on implementing the cooldown and planning procedure. This procedure allows students the opportunity to go to a cooldown area, agreed upon by the class, and cooldown by drawing, reading, or deep breathing. While in the cooldown area students will be asked to plan a problem-solving script (Villa, Thousand, & Nevin, 2010). 2. RULER: The RULER philosophy assists students in developing emotional literacy by Recognizing, Understanding, Labeling, Expressing, and Regulating. Emotional literacy is defined as love-centered emotional intelligence. This can help students in school but more importantly can help them in their future endeavors (Brackett & Kremenitzer, 2011). 3. Participate in Logical Debate: Students need to have the skills to be able to articulate a logical argument. I will challenge students to justify their arguments in class using logical reasoning. 4. Critical Thinking: Students need to be able to think critically in order to problem-solve. We will practice critical thinking by exploring mathematical concepts and developing conjectures. This will help students succeed in many areas of life. I will post a poster, which gives students a guideline on how to think critically. 5. The Lenses of Conflict Transformation: Developing lenses of conflict transformation can help students overcome conflicts. I will help students bring conflicts into focus, then bring it in even closer, and finally magnify the conflict so that it can be analyzed. This will allow students an opportunity to avoid conflicts of that sort in the future (Lederach, 2003). I drew the image below to portray some of the important ideas of Conflict Transformation and I will post it in my classroom. |
